Canton has revised its top speaker line. Not an easy endeavour, considering that the »Reference K« series has been setting standards since 2015. With the new Reference 3 floorstanding speakers, i-fidelity.net embarks on a journey into the world of good sound.

If you have been lucky to enjoy the privilege of dealing professionally with high-end for many years, you will inevitably become more and more demanding over time. On the other hand there are formative experiences that you’ll never forget. Such a rank on my personal »leaderboard« is taken by Raidho, although the speakers of the Danish high-end manufacture only hit my screen on detours: many years ago, at the Munich fair, Nordost was giving demos with an X2, a small floorstander. Though I was used to quite a lot from their expertly compiled and carefully put up stereo systems, particularly in terms of resolution and microdynamics, it was just these characteristics which fascinated me back then; moreover, the sound image was exceptionally coherent and full of inner suspense. A lot of visits to Raidho, or Dantax Radio respectively, followed in the course of years until I was finally presented the ScansonicHD loudspeakers there.

It wasn’t easy to avoid the idea of a competition on company’s own ground; after all, the models by ScansonicHD obviously capture design and technical features of the Raidho speakers. And soundwise they presented themselves at demos in a way which, with an eye to Raidho, didn’t hardly make them appear less controversial. Bearing this background in mind, I had awaited dealing with the MB5 B at my listening room with bated breath, and during these weeks I had indeed one or two crucial experiences, that much I can anticipate. However, as to the profiling of both brands, it becomes clear on closer inspection that the people in charge do by no means intend to cut the ground under their own feet. Thus the XL floorstander designs and some technological goodies remain reserved for Raidho while ScansonicHD puts itself in more affordable price ranges. Nonetheless all ScansonicHD models are developed and built at the company site in Pandrup, Denmark, whereby a lot of manual work is involved. Recently Olaf Sturm could convince himself of the local customs and possibilities; his report is well worth reading and it can be found here.

Besides a conscious renunciation of too much automation, a high level of self-competence and an accordingly high production depth are part of the essence of a company that sticks to the classic manufacturing idea for its two high-end brands. Hence all drivers are made inhouse which should not least be due to the interim ownership of ScanSpeak. The ScansonicHD portfolio comprises two series each of which includes several floorstanders, two or one compact monitor respectively plus one centre speaker and one subwoofer. Furthermore, with the MK5 the range also includes a frameless compact monitor. Being the latest extension to the product line the MB series, which is above the M series, includes four floorstanders of which the MB5 B is the second largest model and thus comes right below their own reference MB 6 B. The MB5 B is recommended for medium-sized rooms which is to be understood primarily in view of its low-frequency equipment. In this respect the 1.18 metre (4 ft. 6 in.) tall loudspeaker causes no problems anyway, and with only 26 centimetres (10.2 in.) in width it leaves a very elegant impression.

Furthermore, this charming appearance is also due to a beautiful backside which sets distinctive accents with a recess for the single-wiring terminal and the three small ventilation openings above it. The asymmetrical backward tapering cabinet shape rounds off an organic design, yet basically the curved sides serve to avoid standing waves inside the body. On its front panel and the lid we have decorative inlays made of carbon fibres which give added stability to the MDF housing. A propos: lovers of classic wood veneers will be glad to see that, in addition to the mat lacquer finishes in black and white with silver feet, there is now also a model version in mat real wood walnut veneer available with black feet for an extra charge of 1,900 euros per pair.

Appropriate means

To a certain degree, the technical concept of the new MB B series is based on its predecessors, but for the reissue ScansonicHD has gone much further than just doing refinements on details. After twelve years of experience in the development and production of Raidho loudspeakers, the design team has incorporated some features of Raidho’s TD series into the transducers of the MB B-series from ScansonicHD and revised its concept from scratch. According to Production Manager Freddy Andersen the MB 5 and the MB5 B have nothing in common except for their look. The declared objective in the development of the MB B-series was to improve above all the spatial imaging and the bass precision, compared to the previous models. Apart from the crossover layout, the numerous means for this purpose can be summarised in two keywords: resonance control and air flow guidance.

For this reason the elaborated cabinet design contains a separate closed chamber for the tweeter and the midrange driver that sits below the HF driver. Within this joint section there’s a small compartment to acoustically isolate the tweeter from the midrange driver. The three woofers are run in parallel and housed in acoustic chambers which are not completely sealed on the rear so they can divert the backward radiated sound into the bass reflex volume. The latter extends through the rear part of the body almost over its full height and vents the already mentioned round reflex ports which are, of course, flow-optimised. While the ventilation of the woofers also heps to counteract compression effects, the chambers of midrange and bass drivers are damped with fibreglass wool. The same material was also attached around the woofer chambers to eliminate reflexions on both the speaker chassis and the sidewalls. For the same reason the engineers applied mineral wool at precisely defined spots on the back wall and in the rear zone of the sidewalls. What importance they ascribe to the resonance optimisation of the cabinet, which is already very solid because of its chambers, is also shown by the fact that the construction is additionally reinforced by a longitudinal and a transverse bracing.

For frequencies above 2.6 kilohertz a ribbon tweeter was chosen; it is offset mounted a bit towards the rear and surrounded by a rectangular waveguide. The diaphragms of all cone drivers, which are exceptionally small with a nominal diameter of 11.4 centimetres (4.5 in.), are made of a carbon fibre braid. These exhibit tiny holes that become visible against intense backlight and serve to control partial vibrations and also to reduce the moving mass. In addition, the centering spider of the new woofer was modified to optimise the transient behaviour. The crossover of the 3-way system is designed as simple as possible and fitted with selected, closely toleranced parts. It has 2nd order filters and passes on to the woofers at 250 hertz. Discreet aluminium outriggers increase the structural stability of the sleek column and take up conical spikes that are equally made of aluminium.

Since their tips are flattened, the MB5 Bs can be placed on sensitive floors without any problems. At the beginning I had concerns because of the slanted soundboard, as my listening spot is only four metres away from the speaker basis. If necessary, one can still compensate a little using the height-adjustable spikes, but it’s generally advisable to choose the placement site which has turned out to be ideal at your personal room, and start listening then. Consequently the elegant speakers took their positions with a rear wall clearance of 1.15 metres (3.77 ft.) on stone slabs which add another five centimetres (2 in.) to the effective height. Angling in, balancing out and off we go! Recordings of Diana Krall (»If I Had You«) and Emilie-Claire Barlow (»Fix You«) are supposed to show whether the proven standard placement also fits here or if more than fine-tuning is required to achieve a clear-cut, centrical voice imaging.

Clarification within seconds

The sound image completely snaps into place, the female singers are accurately focused, correctly proportioned and pictured before me in their proper height – even when they’re moving about in front of the microphone. In my own four walls have rarely heard this so precisely with these songs. Of course, it’s a lucky strike if room and speaker chime in with each other right away; nevertheless a chassis combination needs to play together correctly in order to produce such a stable phantom sound source.

The same picture appears with »Featherlight« from the wonderful album »Slowly, Slowly« by Siril Malmedal Hauge. The size ratios are absolutely correct and the imaging of the singer is perfectly palpable. In doing so the MB5 B makes every nuance of her vocal performance audible in a most natural form; it even reveals very faint breathing noises at some points which had remained hidden from me so far. At the same time it clearly highlights sibilants without presenting them in a pesky way, making Siril’s chanting sound so natural that she almost seems to be present in the flesh. Next I put on the album »Ojos de Gato« by Giovanni Guidi which came out last year, and also with this more complex lineup hardly a sheet of paper fits between the canned music and my own emotional world: the MB5 B places the opulent drumkit, the double bass, the piano and the two wind players on a very spacious stage that is accurately staggered far into the depth and floodlit by bright spotlights.

Light through the whole spectrum

At the same time the instruments have so much breathing room that Chad Taylor on the big drums and Francisco Mela on the drumkit don’t violate each other’s turf and can enter into a fruitful dialogue. The communication between Gianluca Petrella on trombone and James Brandon Lewis on tenor saxophone, which starts right at the beginning of the first track, »Revolución«, quickly takes on a very pushing, sometimes dissonant character, but the ScansonicHD is not at all deterred by this: it fans out the entire timbral spectrum of the two instruments in all shades and gives them the due, pervasive conciseness while the musicians are virtually duelling. When finally pianist Giovanni Guidi joins in the hot action with emphatic tones, it becomes fully apparent how masterfully the MB5 B overlooks the melodious entanglements that give the whole performance its particular charm.

After a creative seven-year break Emmanuel Top, the doyen of acid techno, has produced a new album. »Moma« is a collage of fifteen eponymous tracks some of which are closely related whilst others mark a turning point. Maybe this is because the iconic figure will soon turn fifty, but this work contains no trace whatsoever of the spectacles of the days gone by. Instead Emmanuel Top surprises this time with elements of ambient techno and plenty of atmospheric sound effects in an accurately arranged sound image. However, the abysmally deep grumbling bass runs on »Moma Part 3« make me want to put this graceful speaker through its paces. Briefly: in a sovereign way the MB5 B almost climbs down to the final rung of the scale. It pushes like crazy, yet remains unconditionally controlled and, on a side note, displays an unusually high level stability.

Realistic dimensions

Recently Marco Schiavo and Sergio Marchegiani recorded the piano sonatas for four hands, Köchel catalogue 19d, 358, 381 and 521 by Mozart; this excellent recording by Decca captures the grand piano rather directly. The MB5 B uses this reference to deliver an exceptionally suspense-laden performance, indulging in a magnificent wealth of timbres and convincingly rendering the dynamic range of the concert piano. I had already expected that here, too, it would trace the sound body with razor-sharp contours and in a realistic dimension. Just like the fact that it’s an easy task for this loudspeaker to clearly distinguish the two pianists from each other on the keyboard, even when they’re playing in similar pitches. But I hadn’t expected how far its imaging precision would reach here and what emotional effects it would produce with a piano piece: the representation has a holographic character – like carved in stone the grand piano is standing there, ready for an all-round view in your mind’s eye. Hat’s off to these brilliant speakers!

Test result

The ScansonicHD MB5 B is certainly a most elegant appearance that enriches different styles of furnishing. As to the placement it’s absolutely uncritical. Teamed up with adequate game partners the MB5 B X-rays the microcosmos of a recording, gets down to the fine dynamic job in an utterly agile way, fanning out a splendid spectrum of tonal hues with the finest of shadings. At that it can embed its wealth of nuances into a totally harmonious, coherent and immediately involving performance, not only with good recordings. Moreover, its imaging is very wide, precisely staggered and extremely three-dimensional. Sticking to the picture of the brand name: the MB5 B delivers acoustic UHD.   Marius Donadello
